Forestry Mulching in Athens, TX

A tracked mulcher grinds yaupon, briars, sweetgum and small trees where they stand and leaves the ground covered, not scraped.

Forestry Mulching in Athens

Forestry mulching is the right tool for most of East Texas, and it is the machine I run every day around Tyler. A tracked skid steer with a mulching head drives through standing brush, yaupon, briars, saplings and trees up to a moderate diameter and grinds them into chips on the spot. Nothing gets stacked, burned or hauled. The chips lie on the ground as a mulch layer that holds the sandy Smith County soil together, keeps the sun off the dirt so the yaupon is slower coming back, and lets you walk the property the same day. It is how I open up overgrown acreage in Lindale and Mineola, thin the understory on wooded homesites in Flint and Whitehouse, take pasture back from sweetgum around Canton and Athens, and clear trails and fence lines on timber tracts out toward Gilmer and Kilgore. Because there is no burn pile and no dump fee, it is almost always the cheapest way per acre to turn a thicket back into land you can use.

Land clearing in Athens

Athens is the Henderson County seat, about 35 miles southwest of Tyler where Hwy 31, US-175 and Hwy 19 meet, home of the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center and a courthouse square that still fills up on a Saturday. Lake Athens sits just east of town, Cedar Creek Reservoir is a short drive west, and the country in between is a mix of sandy post oak land, scattered pine, and pasture that goes to cedar and briar the minute somebody stops shredding it. Lake lots, retirement acreage and horse places make up most of what I clear around Athens. I open homesites and drives on tracts along Hwy 31 toward Murchison and down Hwy 19, underbrush lake lots on Lake Athens so the owner can see the water, mulch cedar and brush off pasture, clear fence lines on ranchettes toward Malakoff and Eustace, and take out the storm-damaged water oaks and dead pines that lean toward a roof. The ground here is sandier and more open than Smith County, which makes mulching quick and keeps the price per acre down. One operator, one machine, priced by the acre or the job after a walk with you.

  • Yaupon, briars, privet, sweetgum and small trees ground in place
  • No burning, no windrows, no haul-off cost
  • Mulch layer left behind to hold the sand and slow regrowth
  • Mature pines, post oaks and shade trees left standing
  • Overgrown acreage, homesites, pasture edges, trails and lanes
  • The cheapest per-acre way to reclaim brushy East Texas land

Common Clearing Scenarios in Athens

The land clearing jobs I see most around here, and how I handle them.

Lake Athens lots grown shut

Lots on Lake Athens that sit as weekend places fill in with yaupon, sweetgum and briar between visits. I underbrush them to open the view and the walk to the water and keep the oaks for shade.

Cedar and briar eating pasture

Henderson County pasture goes to eastern red cedar and greenbriar fast. Mulching clears it in a pass, and because cedar does not resprout, the pasture stays open with regular shredding.

Horse places that need fence and a barn pad

Small horse properties are everywhere between Athens and Murchison. I clear the fence rows so they can be rebuilt, mulch the brush back off the pasture and open a pad for a barn or arena while keeping the shade trees.

Forestry Mulching in Athens: FAQs

Do you clear land around Athens and Lake Athens?
Yes. Athens is about 35 miles from Tyler on Hwy 31, inside my radius, and the acreage between Athens, Chandler and Murchison is a regular drive for me.
Is mulching cheaper here than in the pine country?
Often, yes. The post oak and pasture ground around Athens is more open, with cedar and briar instead of solid yaupon, so the mulcher covers more acres in a day. I walk the property and price it for what is actually standing on it.
Can you take out a leaning water oak near my house?
Yes. Storm-split and leaning water oaks are a regular call around here. I drop them in sections or in a controlled direction away from the house and grind the stump so the yard mows clean.
How big a tree can the mulcher take?
Brush, yaupon and saplings are nothing. Trees up to a moderate trunk diameter go through the head without trouble. Past that, big pines and hardwoods are better dropped and the stumps ground separately, which I also do. When we walk the property I will point out anything the mulcher should not be the tool for.
Do I need a burn permit or a dump run?
No. Everything is ground where it stands and spread as mulch. There is no pile to burn, no trailer to load and nothing to pay a landfill for. That is the whole reason mulching costs less per acre than a push-and-burn clear.
How fast does yaupon come back after mulching?
Yaupon resprouts from the roots, so it will try. The mulch layer shades the ground and slows it a lot, and most owners keep the woods open with a bush hog or a re-mulch every couple of years. Where you want it gone permanently, a dirt contractor can grub the roots after I open the ground up, and I can tell you if that is worth it on your place.
How many acres can you mulch in a day?
Light understory under big trees can run several acres a day. Dense second growth with a lot of saplings and small trees is slower, sometimes an acre or two. I quote it after walking the tract so the price reflects what is actually there, not a guess from the road.
