Clearing Land Around Jacksonville

Jacksonville is the biggest town in Cherokee County, about 30 miles south of Tyler on US-69, the old Tomato Capital with the Tomato Bowl downtown and Love’s Lookout on the ridge north of town looking out over miles of pine. Lake Jacksonville sits southwest of the city, US-79 runs east and west through it, and the land in every direction is deep East Texas timber on steep red clay hills. Cherokee County is thicker and hillier than Smith County: loblolly and shortleaf pine, red oak, hickory, sweetgum, and yaupon as dense as it gets. I clear homesites and drives on acreage off US-69 and US-79, underbrush lake lots at Lake Jacksonville, open up hunting and recreational tracts toward Rusk and New Summerfield, mulch fence lines and lanes on timber tracts, and clear hazard pines around homes before a storm does it. The clay hills here gully badly when they are stripped, so mulching in place is more than a preference. The chip layer holds the slope through the next hard rain, which a bare dozer cut never does. One operator, one machine, priced by the acre or the job after I walk the tract with you.

Common Clearing Scenarios in Jacksonville

The land clearing jobs I see most around here, and how I handle them.

Steep clay hills that gully when bare

Cherokee County land is steeper and heavier than Smith County, and a bare-cleared hillside here washes into gullies after one storm. Mulching leaves a chip layer on the slope that holds the clay, which is why I clear in place instead of pushing and burning.

Lake Jacksonville lots grown shut

Lots around Lake Jacksonville fill in with yaupon and sweetgum down to the water. I underbrush them to open the view and a path to the lake and leave the pines and oaks that shade the lot.

Hunting tracts you cannot see into

Timber tracts toward Rusk and New Summerfield grow solid with yaupon under the pines. I mulch lanes, openings and the ground around a camp so you can hunt the place, and leave the thick cover where you want it.

Land Clearing in Jacksonville: FAQs

Do you come down to Jacksonville and Cherokee County?
Yes. Jacksonville is about 30 miles south of Tyler on US-69 and well inside my area. The acreage between Bullard, Jacksonville and Rusk is a regular part of my work.
My land is steep. Is a mulcher the right machine?
On Cherokee County hills it is the best machine there is. A tracked mulcher handles the slopes and leaves a chip layer that keeps the clay from washing. If a particular slope is too steep to work safely I tell you when we walk it.
How thick is too thick for the mulcher?
Yaupon and saplings are never too thick; that is what the machine is built for. Big pines and hardwoods are dropped and the stumps ground separately. The thicker the growth, the slower the acre, so I price it after seeing it rather than guessing.
