Selective Underbrush Clearing in Bullard, TX

Underbrushing: the yaupon, briar and scrub under your trees ground out while every pine and oak you want stays standing.

Underbrush in Bullard

Underbrushing is thinning out the tangle beneath your trees while leaving the trees themselves alone, and in Smith County that means a fight with yaupon. Yaupon holly grows into a solid, head-high thicket under loblolly pine and post oak, and with greenbriar, privet and young sweetgum it turns a pretty stand of timber into something you cannot see into, walk through or hunt. I grind that understory out with the mulcher and leave a clean floor of chips under the canopy. The result is open, park-like woods: shade on top, mulch underneath, sight lines all the way across the property. It is the first thing most people want done on a wooded homesite in Flint, Whitehouse or Lindale, the way lake lot owners at Lake Palestine and Lake Tyler open up a view, and how hunters and recreational owners on bigger tracts around Mineola, Gilmer and Jacksonville get their woods usable again. The big trees stay. The junk growth choking the ground under them goes.

Land clearing in Bullard

Bullard straddles the Smith and Cherokee county line on US-69 south of Tyler, and the east shore of Lake Palestine is its back yard. The lake communities at Emerald Bay and Eagle’s Bluff, the acreage along FM 344 running out to the water, and the ranchettes toward Teaselville and Mt. Selman have made Bullard one of the hottest places in East Texas to buy land, and almost all of that land is timber. This is where the Smith County sand starts rolling into the red clay hills of Cherokee County, and the woods get thicker as you go south: loblolly pine, post oak, hickory, sweetgum, and yaupon so dense you lose a dog in it. I clear a lot of lake-area lots here, opening a view and a walk to the water without stripping the shade. I open homesites and drives on acreage off FM 344 and FM 2493, mulch understory on tracts that were bought for the trees, and clear fence lines for people who want a horse or a few head of cattle on the place. Bullard owners tend to want the woods kept, just made usable, and that is exactly what a mulcher does. Per-acre or per-job pricing, set after I walk the property with you.

  • Yaupon, greenbriar, privet and young sweetgum ground out under the canopy
  • Every mature pine, post oak and shade tree left standing
  • Clean mulch floor instead of debris piles
  • Open, walkable woods with sight lines across the tract
  • Better wildlife browse and lower fire fuel around structures
  • Homesites, lake lots, hunting ground and recreational acreage

Common Clearing Scenarios in Bullard

The land clearing jobs I see most around here, and how I handle them.

Lake Palestine lots grown shut to the water

Lots along the east shore and in the gated communities fill in with yaupon and sweetgum until there is no view. I underbrush them selectively, open a corridor to the water and leave the pines and oaks that make the lot worth having.

Clay hills south of town that gully when stripped

Toward the Cherokee County side the ground gets steeper and the red clay slicks and gullies when it is bare-cleared. Mulching holds a chip layer on the slope so a new clearing does not turn into a ditch after the first storm.

Ranchettes that need pasture and fence

People buying ten and twenty acres around Bullard want a few horses or cows on it. I mulch the brush back off old pasture, clear and open the fence lines, and take out the trees in the way of a barn pad.

Underbrush in Bullard: FAQs

Do you clear lots inside Emerald Bay and Eagle’s Bluff?
Yes, and that kind of lot is where a mulcher earns its keep: selective work, tight property lines, trees that have to stay. I clear the understory and hazard trees and keep the machine where you want it. Check your community’s rules on tree removal first; I will work to them.
My Bullard tract is steep. Can you still mulch it?
Tracked mulchers handle the slopes around here fine, and the chip layer they leave is the best thing for a steep clay hillside, because it keeps the ground from washing. Where a slope is truly too steep for the machine I tell you so when we walk it.
Can you get old pasture back for horses?
Yes. Pasture that has grown up in yaupon, briars and sweetgum saplings mulches back to open ground in a pass, and once it is shredded a couple of times a year it stays that way. I also clear the fence rows so you can rebuild the fence before the stock shows up.
What exactly is underbrushing?
Clearing the growth beneath your trees, mostly yaupon, briar, privet and sweetgum saplings, while leaving the trees standing. It is done with a forestry mulcher so the cleared material becomes a layer of chips on the ground rather than piles. You end up with open, park-like woods instead of a thicket.
Will clearing the underbrush hurt my big trees?
Done right, it helps them. Taking out the yaupon competing for water and light takes pressure off the mature pines and oaks. I work around the trees you want kept and stay off their trunks and major roots. Flag anything specific you want protected.
How long before the yaupon is back?
Yaupon resprouts from the roots, so it will try. The chip layer slows it down considerably, and most owners keep the woods open with a bush hog or a re-mulch every two or three years. If there is a spot you want permanently clean, grubbing the roots is a dirt-work step that can follow my clearing.
