Selective Underbrush Clearing in Chandler, TX

Underbrushing: the yaupon, briar and scrub under your trees ground out while every pine and oak you want stays standing.

Underbrush in Chandler

Underbrushing is thinning out the tangle beneath your trees while leaving the trees themselves alone, and in Smith County that means a fight with yaupon. Yaupon holly grows into a solid, head-high thicket under loblolly pine and post oak, and with greenbriar, privet and young sweetgum it turns a pretty stand of timber into something you cannot see into, walk through or hunt. I grind that understory out with the mulcher and leave a clean floor of chips under the canopy. The result is open, park-like woods: shade on top, mulch underneath, sight lines all the way across the property. It is the first thing most people want done on a wooded homesite in Flint, Whitehouse or Lindale, the way lake lot owners at Lake Palestine and Lake Tyler open up a view, and how hunters and recreational owners on bigger tracts around Mineola, Gilmer and Jacksonville get their woods usable again. The big trees stay. The junk growth choking the ground under them goes.

Selective Underbrush Clearing in Chandler, TX

Land clearing in Chandler

Chandler sits on Hwy 31 west of Tyler in Henderson County, at the north end of Lake Palestine where the Neches River comes in. It is a lake town and a commuter town at the same time: close enough to Tyler to drive in every day, far enough out that you can still buy acreage, and ringed by water on the south side. The land around Chandler is where the deep East Texas pine starts to give way to post oak and open sandy ground, so a tract here might be pine timber with yaupon on one end and post oak and briars on the other. I clear lake lots along the north shore and down FM 315 so owners can see the water, open homesites and drives on acreage off Hwy 31 toward Brownsboro, mulch understory on recreational tracts people bought for weekends, and take out the water oaks and sweetgums that spring storms leave leaning. Lake property is tight work: property lines are close, the shoreline has rules, and the shade trees are the point. A mulcher handles that where a dozer cannot. Pricing is by the acre or the job and set after I walk the land with you.

  • Yaupon, greenbriar, privet and young sweetgum ground out under the canopy
  • Every mature pine, post oak and shade tree left standing
  • Clean mulch floor instead of debris piles
  • Open, walkable woods with sight lines across the tract
  • Better wildlife browse and lower fire fuel around structures
  • Homesites, lake lots, hunting ground and recreational acreage

Common Clearing Scenarios in Chandler

The land clearing jobs I see most around here, and how I handle them.

Lake lots on the north shore grown shut

Weekend places on the Chandler end of Lake Palestine sit unused for months and come back thick with yaupon and sweetgum. I open the view and the walk to the water and leave the oaks and pines that shade the lot.

Where pine turns to post oak and briar

West of Chandler the woods thin out into post oak and sandy pasture, and the brush problem shifts from yaupon to greenbriar, cedar and sweetgum saplings taking over open ground. Mulching clears both kinds and leaves the ground covered either way.

River-bottom ground that stays wet

Land toward the Neches and the creeks that feed the lake holds water and grows brush fast. I time that work for a dry spell and mulch instead of scraping so the soft ground does not rut or wash.

Underbrush in Chandler: FAQs

Do you come out to Chandler and Brownsboro?
Yes. Chandler is a short drive west of Tyler on Hwy 31, and the acreage between Chandler, Brownsboro and the lake is in my regular area.
Can you clear a lake lot without disturbing the shoreline?
Yes. I underbrush the lot and open a view corridor and stay back from the water’s edge. The mulcher leaves chips rather than bare dirt, so nothing washes into the lake. If your lot has shoreline rules, tell me and I work to them.
My Chandler tract is half pine, half open post oak. Does that change the price?
A little. Yaupon under pine and briar in post oak both mulch fast, so the per-acre price stays in the same range. Saplings and small trees in old pasture take longer. I walk it and price each part for what is actually there.
What exactly is underbrushing?
Clearing the growth beneath your trees, mostly yaupon, briar, privet and sweetgum saplings, while leaving the trees standing. It is done with a forestry mulcher so the cleared material becomes a layer of chips on the ground rather than piles. You end up with open, park-like woods instead of a thicket.
Will clearing the underbrush hurt my big trees?
Done right, it helps them. Taking out the yaupon competing for water and light takes pressure off the mature pines and oaks. I work around the trees you want kept and stay off their trunks and major roots. Flag anything specific you want protected.
How long before the yaupon is back?
Yaupon resprouts from the roots, so it will try. The chip layer slows it down considerably, and most owners keep the woods open with a bush hog or a re-mulch every two or three years. If there is a spot you want permanently clean, grubbing the roots is a dirt-work step that can follow my clearing.
