Selective Underbrush Clearing in Kilgore, TX

Underbrushing: the yaupon, briar and scrub under your trees ground out while every pine and oak you want stays standing.

Underbrush in Kilgore

Underbrushing is thinning out the tangle beneath your trees while leaving the trees themselves alone, and in Smith County that means a fight with yaupon. Yaupon holly grows into a solid, head-high thicket under loblolly pine and post oak, and with greenbriar, privet and young sweetgum it turns a pretty stand of timber into something you cannot see into, walk through or hunt. I grind that understory out with the mulcher and leave a clean floor of chips under the canopy. The result is open, park-like woods: shade on top, mulch underneath, sight lines all the way across the property. It is the first thing most people want done on a wooded homesite in Flint, Whitehouse or Lindale, the way lake lot owners at Lake Palestine and Lake Tyler open up a view, and how hunters and recreational owners on bigger tracts around Mineola, Gilmer and Jacksonville get their woods usable again. The big trees stay. The junk growth choking the ground under them goes.

Land clearing in Kilgore

Kilgore sits on the Gregg and Rusk county line about 25 miles east of Tyler on Hwy 31, the town that the East Texas Oil Field built in 1930 and still wears it: the derricks of the World’s Richest Acre downtown, the East Texas Oil Museum at Kilgore College, and old lease ground on every side. Hwy 42, Hwy 135 and Hwy 259 run out of town through pine timber and pasture, I-20 and the Sabine River bottom are just north toward Liberty City, and the Rusk County side to the south is pine plantation and ranch country. The land here has a history under it: old well pads, lease roads, pipeline rights-of-way and tank battery sites that have grown shut with yaupon and sweetgum since the field slowed down. I reopen those roads and rights-of-way, mulch the brush off old pad sites so the acreage is whole again, clear homesites and drives for people building off Hwy 42 and Hwy 135, underbrush wooded tracts, clear fence lines on the ranch ground south of town and take out the hazard pines near homes. Sandy ground, fast-growing brush, and a lot of iron in the way means I walk every tract first, flag what matters, and price it by the acre or the job before the machine shows up.

  • Yaupon, greenbriar, privet and young sweetgum ground out under the canopy
  • Every mature pine, post oak and shade tree left standing
  • Clean mulch floor instead of debris piles
  • Open, walkable woods with sight lines across the tract
  • Better wildlife browse and lower fire fuel around structures
  • Homesites, lake lots, hunting ground and recreational acreage

Common Clearing Scenarios in Kilgore

The land clearing jobs I see most around here, and how I handle them.

Old oil field ground with roads and pipelines grown shut

Much of the acreage around Kilgore carries lease roads, pipeline strips and old pad sites from the boom. I walk the tract to find the wellheads and markers, then reopen the roads, clear the rights-of-way to width and mulch the pads back into the rest of the land.

Pine plantation edges and thick yaupon

Gregg and Rusk county timber is dense loblolly with a yaupon understory you cannot see into. I underbrush homesites and recreational tracts so they are open and walkable while the pines stay for shade and value.

River-bottom ground north toward the Sabine

Land toward Liberty City and the Sabine bottom stays wet and grows brush fast. I schedule it for dry weather and mulch rather than scrape so the soft ground is not rutted into a mess.

Underbrush in Kilgore: FAQs

Do you work in Kilgore and Liberty City?
Yes. Kilgore is about 25 miles east of Tyler on Hwy 31, inside my radius, and the ground from Liberty City down through Kilgore into Rusk County is part of my regular area.
Can you clear around old wellheads and pipelines safely?
Yes, and it starts with the walk. I locate and flag wellheads, pipeline markers and anything else sticking out of the ground before the machine starts, and keep a clear margin around them. If you have a plat or the operator’s map, bring it.
Can you reopen a lease road so I can reach the back of my place?
That is a common job here. I mulch the road to a drivable width, clear the overhanging growth and leave a buffer on each side so it stays open. Same for pipeline and power line rights-of-way crossing the property.
What exactly is underbrushing?
Clearing the growth beneath your trees, mostly yaupon, briar, privet and sweetgum saplings, while leaving the trees standing. It is done with a forestry mulcher so the cleared material becomes a layer of chips on the ground rather than piles. You end up with open, park-like woods instead of a thicket.
Will clearing the underbrush hurt my big trees?
Done right, it helps them. Taking out the yaupon competing for water and light takes pressure off the mature pines and oaks. I work around the trees you want kept and stay off their trunks and major roots. Flag anything specific you want protected.
How long before the yaupon is back?
Yaupon resprouts from the roots, so it will try. The chip layer slows it down considerably, and most owners keep the woods open with a bush hog or a re-mulch every two or three years. If there is a spot you want permanently clean, grubbing the roots is a dirt-work step that can follow my clearing.
