Forestry Mulching in Lindale, TX

A tracked mulcher grinds yaupon, briars, sweetgum and small trees where they stand and leaves the ground covered, not scraped.

Forestry Mulching in Lindale

Forestry mulching is the right tool for most of East Texas, and it is the machine I run every day around Tyler. A tracked skid steer with a mulching head drives through standing brush, yaupon, briars, saplings and trees up to a moderate diameter and grinds them into chips on the spot. Nothing gets stacked, burned or hauled. The chips lie on the ground as a mulch layer that holds the sandy Smith County soil together, keeps the sun off the dirt so the yaupon is slower coming back, and lets you walk the property the same day. It is how I open up overgrown acreage in Lindale and Mineola, thin the understory on wooded homesites in Flint and Whitehouse, take pasture back from sweetgum around Canton and Athens, and clear trails and fence lines on timber tracts out toward Gilmer and Kilgore. Because there is no burn pile and no dump fee, it is almost always the cheapest way per acre to turn a thicket back into land you can use.

Land clearing in Lindale

Lindale sits where I-20 crosses US-69 north of Tyler, close enough to Dallas that the interstate has turned it into one of the fastest-growing towns in Smith County. People come for the small-town square and the Cannery district downtown, the blackberry farms, and the room to spread out, and then they buy ten acres off FM 16 or Hwy 110 North and find out what East Texas timber looks like up close. The ground around Lindale is sandy and rolling, which is why blackberries and peaches do so well here, and it grows pine, post oak and sweetgum with a yaupon thicket underneath just as well. I clear a lot of new acreage up here: homesites in the country between Lindale and Swan, lots around Hideaway and Garden Valley, ranchettes toward Mt. Sylvan and the Wood County line, and old pasture that has grown back up in briars and sweetgum while a place sat on the market. The job is usually the same: mulch the understory so the owner can walk the land, open a pad and a drive, take out the dead pines, and clear the fence lines so the place can be fenced for a horse or two. One machine, one operator, priced by the acre after I walk it with you.

  • Yaupon, briars, privet, sweetgum and small trees ground in place
  • No burning, no windrows, no haul-off cost
  • Mulch layer left behind to hold the sand and slow regrowth
  • Mature pines, post oaks and shade trees left standing
  • Overgrown acreage, homesites, pasture edges, trails and lanes
  • The cheapest per-acre way to reclaim brushy East Texas land

Common Clearing Scenarios in Lindale

The land clearing jobs I see most around here, and how I handle them.

New acreage buyers along the interstate

A lot of Lindale land is being split into five and ten-acre tracts for people commuting toward Dallas. Nearly all of it is standing timber with a yaupon understory. I open the homesite and drive and mulch the rest so the tract is usable the week you close.

Old berry and peach ground gone to brush

Lindale has sandy soil that was farmed for blackberries, peaches and watermelons, and plenty of that ground has grown back in sweetgum saplings and briars. Mulching takes it back to open ground without a burn pile and without stripping the sand bare.

Wooded lots at Hideaway and Garden Valley

Lots in the lake and golf communities west of town need careful, selective work: clear the understory and the hazard trees, keep the pines and oaks that make the lot, and stay off the neighbor’s line. That is mulcher work, not dozer work.

Forestry Mulching in Lindale: FAQs

Do you clear land around Lindale, Hideaway and Swan?
Yes. Lindale is fifteen minutes up US-69 from Tyler and I am up here constantly. Hideaway, Garden Valley, Swan, Mt. Sylvan and the acreage along FM 16 and Hwy 110 North are all in my regular area.
I bought acreage near Lindale that is solid woods. Where do I start?
Walk it with me. We find the corners, you tell me where you picture the house and the drive, and I tell you what the understory will cost to mulch and what the pad will cost to open. Most people are surprised how much of the land they get back just from underbrushing.
Can you clear a fence line on sandy ground without tearing it up?
Yes. The mulcher grinds the brush off the line and leaves chips on the ground rather than bare sand, so the fence row does not wash out before you get posts in. I leave a mowable strip on each side so it stays open.
How big a tree can the mulcher take?
Brush, yaupon and saplings are nothing. Trees up to a moderate trunk diameter go through the head without trouble. Past that, big pines and hardwoods are better dropped and the stumps ground separately, which I also do. When we walk the property I will point out anything the mulcher should not be the tool for.
Do I need a burn permit or a dump run?
No. Everything is ground where it stands and spread as mulch. There is no pile to burn, no trailer to load and nothing to pay a landfill for. That is the whole reason mulching costs less per acre than a push-and-burn clear.
How fast does yaupon come back after mulching?
Yaupon resprouts from the roots, so it will try. The mulch layer shades the ground and slows it a lot, and most owners keep the woods open with a bush hog or a re-mulch every couple of years. Where you want it gone permanently, a dirt contractor can grub the roots after I open the ground up, and I can tell you if that is worth it on your place.
How many acres can you mulch in a day?
Light understory under big trees can run several acres a day. Dense second growth with a lot of saplings and small trees is slower, sometimes an acre or two. I quote it after walking the tract so the price reflects what is actually there, not a guess from the road.
