Forestry Mulching in Mineola, TX

A tracked mulcher grinds yaupon, briars, sweetgum and small trees where they stand and leaves the ground covered, not scraped.

Forestry Mulching in Mineola

Forestry mulching is the right tool for most of East Texas, and it is the machine I run every day around Tyler. A tracked skid steer with a mulching head drives through standing brush, yaupon, briars, saplings and trees up to a moderate diameter and grinds them into chips on the spot. Nothing gets stacked, burned or hauled. The chips lie on the ground as a mulch layer that holds the sandy Smith County soil together, keeps the sun off the dirt so the yaupon is slower coming back, and lets you walk the property the same day. It is how I open up overgrown acreage in Lindale and Mineola, thin the understory on wooded homesites in Flint and Whitehouse, take pasture back from sweetgum around Canton and Athens, and clear trails and fence lines on timber tracts out toward Gilmer and Kilgore. Because there is no burn pile and no dump fee, it is almost always the cheapest way per acre to turn a thicket back into land you can use.

Land clearing in Mineola

Mineola is a railroad town in Wood County where US-69 meets US-80, about 25 miles north of Tyler, with a historic downtown, an Amtrak stop and the Sabine River bottom running along its south side. The Mineola Nature Preserve covers thousands of acres of that river bottom, Lake Holbrook sits northwest of town, and Lake Fork is a short drive northeast, so this is country people buy for the outdoors: hunting tracts, fishing weekends, retirement acreage and ranchettes off Hwy 37 and FM 49 toward Hainesville. All of it is timber. Wood County grows pine, oak and sweetgum as thick as anywhere in East Texas, with a yaupon understory on the uplands and a tangle of privet and briar down in the bottoms. I clear homesites and drives on acreage around Mineola, open hunting tracts so you can move through them and see a deer, mulch fence lines and lanes on bigger places, take back pasture that has gone to sweetgum, and clear the hazard trees that storms leave around a house. The uplands are sandy and the bottoms stay wet, so mulching is the right approach for both: no bare ground to wash, no scraping soft soil. One operator, one machine, priced by the acre or the job after a walk.

  • Yaupon, briars, privet, sweetgum and small trees ground in place
  • No burning, no windrows, no haul-off cost
  • Mulch layer left behind to hold the sand and slow regrowth
  • Mature pines, post oaks and shade trees left standing
  • Overgrown acreage, homesites, pasture edges, trails and lanes
  • The cheapest per-acre way to reclaim brushy East Texas land

Common Clearing Scenarios in Mineola

The land clearing jobs I see most around here, and how I handle them.

Hunting and recreational tracts you cannot walk

A lot of Wood County land is bought for deer season and weekends and has gone solid with yaupon. I underbrush lanes, openings and the ground around a camp or stand so you can move through the woods and see, and leave the mature timber for cover.

Sabine bottom ground that stays soft

The river bottom south of town and the creeks feeding it hold water and grow privet and briar thick. I schedule that work for dry weather and mulch rather than scrape so the soft ground is not rutted into a mess.

Pasture lost to sweetgum

Old pasture around Mineola grows back in sweetgum saplings faster than anything, and after five years it looks like woods. Mulching takes it back to open ground in a pass, and once it is shredded regularly it stays pasture.

Forestry Mulching in Mineola: FAQs

Is Mineola in your area?
Yes. Mineola is about 25 miles north of Tyler up US-69, and the acreage around it, out toward Hainesville, Lake Holbrook and the Quitman road, is a regular part of my work.
Can you open up a hunting tract without ruining the cover?
That is the idea. I mulch shooting lanes, trails and openings where you want them and leave the thick cover where the deer bed. You get a tract you can move through and hunt instead of a wall of yaupon with a feeder in it.
Do you clear ground in the river bottom?
Yes, in the right season. Bottom ground near the Sabine stays wet much of the year, so I wait for a dry stretch and mulch rather than scrape. Tell me how the land drains and I will plan the timing with you.
How big a tree can the mulcher take?
Brush, yaupon and saplings are nothing. Trees up to a moderate trunk diameter go through the head without trouble. Past that, big pines and hardwoods are better dropped and the stumps ground separately, which I also do. When we walk the property I will point out anything the mulcher should not be the tool for.
Do I need a burn permit or a dump run?
No. Everything is ground where it stands and spread as mulch. There is no pile to burn, no trailer to load and nothing to pay a landfill for. That is the whole reason mulching costs less per acre than a push-and-burn clear.
How fast does yaupon come back after mulching?
Yaupon resprouts from the roots, so it will try. The mulch layer shades the ground and slows it a lot, and most owners keep the woods open with a bush hog or a re-mulch every couple of years. Where you want it gone permanently, a dirt contractor can grub the roots after I open the ground up, and I can tell you if that is worth it on your place.
How many acres can you mulch in a day?
Light understory under big trees can run several acres a day. Dense second growth with a lot of saplings and small trees is slower, sometimes an acre or two. I quote it after walking the tract so the price reflects what is actually there, not a guess from the road.
